The Scandinavian section of the Department of Literary Studies at Ghent University calls for papers for their Nordic Publishing Perspectives Symposium. The Symposium will take place at Ghent University May 16, 2024. Abstract deadline is March 3, 2024.

This one-day symposium will showcase presentations and discussions centered around the challenges of crafting value in the literary (semi-)periphery in today’s age of digital production and globalization. The symposium will explore, but is not limited to, the following topics:

- The digital transformation of the book market

- The changing role of literary institutions (incl. authors, publishers & literary criticism)

- Sustainability of the book business and business models

- The cultural dynamics of translation and transfer

- Reading habits and consumption patterns

The symposium is organized within the framework of the FWO-funded research project “Publishing between profit and prestige” and will be formatted as a dynamic exchange with students of the Master’s course in Nordic Literature at the University of Ghent , focusing on contextual approaches to the study of literature.

The symposium also aims to revitalize former cooperation initiatives that took place within the U4 University Network and seeks to restrengthen the ties between Ghent, Göttingen, Groningen, and Uppsala, as well as foster relationships with other universities in the Nordic region.

Abstracts should include 20-minute presentations in either English or a Scandinavian language and should be submitted to Robbe Vandersmissen, via robbe.vandersmissen@ugent.be, by the end of 3 March 2024. Proposed abstracts should not exceed 300 words (references excluded) and be accompanied by a short biography. The symposium will be held in both English and Scandinavian languages.
