Abstract
“Flower by the shore – a quest for the healing power of nature in Strindberg’s paintings and writings”
The paper will explore the interplay between August Strindberg’s literary and visual artistry, drawing parallels between the flowers in his writings – Little Bluewing Finds the Goldpowder, Easter, Blue Book – and in his paintings, such as Flower by the Shore, Flowers in the Moore. Strindberg’s literary themes of guilt, transformation, and redemption find echoes in his visual expressions, where nature becomes both a symbolic and emotional landscape. His paintings depict flowers not as botanical studies but as symbols of resilience, survival, and hope. In his writings, the presence of flowers in Little Bluewing Finds the Gold powder, in Easter, as well as in Blue Book symbolise different stages of physical, spiritual, and mystical healing. By examining cross-disciplinary connections, this paper highlights how Strindberg’s creative vision transcended mediums, reinforcing his belief in art as a spiritual and existential inquiry.

Daniela Gologan (University Babes-Bolyai Cluj) and dr. Elena di Pede (Université de Metz).
