22nd International Strindberg Conference

Strindberg and Memory

9 – 12 June 2022

Vytautas Magnus University Kaunas, Lithuania

The 22nd international Strindberg conference is primarily focused on the legacy of Strindbergs‘ dramaturgy. Strindberg‘s timeless work are inspiring and full of life. The reasons for their relevance and popularity can be understood by using the concept of memory. His works are full of memories – individual and collective ones. Strindberg's own life appears today as a reminiscence of a performance; it was constantly accompanied by conflicts with the bourgeoise society, women, with his inner self and even divine forces. He created not „just“ theatre but the Theatre of Memory in the very deep sense. Reading his works and experiencing the productions we can understand the role of the author and of our lives in contemporary society.

The conference is open to artists and scholars, who want to discuss their experiences and insights into the drama experienced or created by Strindberg. Papers exploring Strindberg’s dramaturgy and other writings as well as productions in modern and post- dramatic theatre, and in post-colonial context, are welcome. The accent should be put on different types of memory and its functions.

The sub-themes of the conference concerned:
  • Peculiarity of Strindberg’s modern drama;
  • The importance of Strindberg‘s dramaturgy in post-colonial theatre;
  • Strindberg‘s dramaturgy in post-dramatic theatre;
  • Strindberg‘s dramaturgy as the source of gnosis (the interpersonal experiences of human nature and the meaning of life)
  • Strindberg‘s recollection of his own life as drama;
  • Strindberg in today’s memory;
  • Memory as a structural principle of Strindberg’s writings.
